My takeaways from the talks
TALK 1
The two paths of architecture in the age of modern
About a 100 years ago, modernism was innovated. It began much before it was actually recognised. Sooner hands were replaced by machines which suggests that with the expansion of industrialisation, modernism took birth.
The industrialisation created a gap between new professions and the the traditional crafts. The discussion on extracting maximum from minimum and how it leads to exploitation of labour and environment.
Modernism main goal was to create a basic sameness around the world and it has achieved it. This is a curse and a blessing both
All this was amazing experience for me. I take from this talk that modernism change us completely, modernism achieve its goal to attain sameness across the globe but it has negative impact too.
TALK 2
Style,Stylistic evolution and the notion of zeitgeist:The Indian perspective
Style,Stylistic evolution and the notion of zeitgeist:The Indian perspective
This talk was totally completely new to me. I never read and listened about the zeigeist, history of western art, evolution ,chitras etc.The talk started with the flow map of deterministic evolution , history of western art. He talked about the etymology of the word style which comes from the word stylus which really intrigued me.This talk gave us a deep insight into the art of sculptures where Deepak sir mentioned about the liveliness and natural depictions of gods and goddesses in figures.
The way sir created connections between the Baroque and Ganda in India really helped me understand the essence of the sculpture.
Also I learnt about concept of Riti and Style, they both are similar but different concept. It's was such an amazing experience to learn and gather information about western and Indian concept of art.
TALK 3
Clothing: An overview
This was one my favourite talks. This talk was about costume , clothing and history. I already knew about Culture, Tangible and Intangible aspects, But this talk also broaden my view about culture, material and non material culture. Non Material culture deals with norms , briefs, practices while Material culture deals with physical object. While listening to the presentation I was able to create connections between the popular cultures.During the talk I realised that how little things that were done either to prevent something or to do something sooner or later became trends like the canopies that were mentioned in the talk and how they were used by Mughals or how men disfigured women in India and how later became a trend and a beauty standard.
